Final day of Maccabiah…

Good morning form a sunny cplv!  Our campers are having such a great time at Maccabiah and the competition is close on both sides of camp.  Yesterday, at Poyntelle our campers competed in boating events, swimming, basketball, soccer, softball, gaga, sidewalk chalk, dance, anagrams, flag, ping poing, triathlon, iron man/woman and kickball.  Our LV campers competed in football, basketball, soccer, tennis, basketball and dance.  Last night was rope burn.  Rope burn is an amazing camp tradition.  The rope which is as thick as a soda can is left to soak in the lake for a week.  Campers who have been at camp for the most years are chosen to be wood collectors, wood breakers and rope burners.  They spend all week collecting wood in preparation for rope burn. Each team is given three matches and for each additional match or piece of paper that is used teams lose 5 points.  As the fires grow the teams cheer and yell support!  It’s incredibly exciting to watch.  Teams are closely supervised and after both teams burn through the rope the burners and breakers jump in the lake together to cool off.

Today is the last day of Maccabiah and campers are competing in the Apache relay.  This is a long relay race that involves every camper.  The activities range from eating a peanut butter sandwich with t-rex arms to cartwheeling across the soccer field.  The race begins with a soccer punt and ends with a half- court shot on the basketball court.  This afternoon there will be time for teams to prep for sing tonight.  Sing is the culmination of Maccabiah.  Campers prepare a comedy song, an alma mater, a cheer, a banner and shield.  It’s an emotional night and the beginning of an emotional weekend as we spend our last Shabbat together and enjoy banquet and burn out.
